The German cities of Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg and Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, share a large tram network first opened in 1878. There's a very small number of underground stations, primarily in Ludwigshafen, which date from an aborted stadtbahn/U-bahn project. Also, the interurban loop line 5 runs through Mannheim partially on shared tracks on its way between Heidelberg and Weinheim.
