Metro do Porto is a tram system in Porto (also known in English as
Oporto), Portugal. Calling it a tram system undersells it though – really
it's more like a hybrid of tram and metro, like the
Hannover Stadtbahn – it runs
underground with substantial stations in the centre of the city but
elsewhere mostly runs on the surface with more basic modern-style tram
stops. Unlike German Stadtbahn systems though, it opened in 2002 as a
brand-new system, rather than as an upgrade of an older tram network
(although parts are converted railway lines), and operates entirely using
low-floor trams rather than high-floor. For more information and history,
